What is VoIP?
VoIP is Voice over Internet Protocol, which is a technology that allows you to make and receive phone calls and faxes over the Internet instead of through the telephone network.
Why should I use VoIP?

What equipment and services do I need for VoIP?
You need a broadband Internet connection (DSL, cable or satellite), VoIP service provider, and one of the following:
IP phone, also called an Internet phone or broadband phone
VoIP software, speakers and microphone that allows your PC to act as a phone
Analog telephone adapter (ATA), which connects between your standard analog phone and the Internet
Can I make calls while I surf the Web?
Yes, your VoIP phone call shares the Internet connection with other computers that are on the network.
Why do I need a VoIP service provider if I have an Internet connection?
VoIP service providers interface between the Internet (IP) and telecomm (PSTN) networks and are needed to initiate and terminate calls between these two networks. This allows you to send and receive calls from people that are using a standard phone or cell.
Can I plug my IP phone into an Internet connection anywhere?
Yes, you can send and receive calls from your VoIP phone while traveling from any broadband Internet connection as VoIP is not location-based.
Will I lose phone service if my Internet connection or power goes down?
Unfortunately yes, this is one drawback of using VoIP. However, most people now have cell phones that could be used as a backup in such situations.
